In fact, these girls show more innovation and style than a sizable amount of the other directors at this year’s Berlinale. I’d happily sit through all 26 of these shorts in a row.

Presentation of the Berlinale Camera for Edgar Reitz

Filmstunde_23, my graduation from film school. It's easy when you know how to do it, right?

Over 50 years ago, Edgar Reitz taught filmmaking to a class consisting of young, 13-14 year old girls. His ultimate goal was to accomplish a film revolution, a revolution that would make the art of filmmaking a subject to be taught at every school. This change never happened, but now, after various passing decades, the class is back and ready for a reunion with Reitz.

So... the past and the present meet again, the analogue past becomes one with the digital present. Reitz sees cinema as a way…

Teen girls take a film class and an entire world opens up for them. 50 years later, they meet with their now 90 year old teacher, director Edgar Reitz, to watch the footage and talk about the importance of cinema as a whole and this class experiment in particular.

I knew I would love this! I wish at least one of the girls had gone on to make movies, some of those classroom shorts are fantastic!

  • Review by Marya E. Gates ★★★★

Watching this made me ache. I loved seeing this girls find their voices through filmmaking as teens, but I so wish they had had the support to continue growing as artists if they had so wanted.

  • Review by Erik Hädrich ★★★★★

  • Review by DIEGO BATLLE ★★★★½

  • Review by Eternality Tan ★★★½

Moving in unexpected ways, this meta-filmic documentary about a director who conducted a series of film classes for a group of German girls in 1968, brings everyone back for a reunion as they revisit those wonderful days when filmmaking seemed to have limitless pedagogical possibilities.

  • Review by High On Films

Films about filmmaking can be particularly tricky. While they can help us understand the mechanics of this art form, they can easily turn into self-serving documents for the central character/artist. So, I was hesitant to watch the new Edgar Reitz documentary. Luckily, it isn’t remotely as self-serving as I imagined. “Filmstunde_23” (“Subject: Filmmaking”) professes the importance of cinema as a form of communication. It hopes cinema to enter the school curriculum, similar to any spoken or written language.
