My girls and I love distressed jeans, but the problem with them is that the cute distressing often turns into a big hole. We were shopping over spring break, and I saw the cutest pair of patched jeans in the store. The price was anything but cute! I knew I could easily make them, and it would kill two birds with one stone-create a new pair of jeans for my daughter without spending much money, and patch her holy jeans that were driving me crazy! It was a win win!!! We made a quick trip to the fabric store, and began creating!

~A pair of holy jeans (this would be great for stained jeans, too!)

~Heat bond or stitch witchery

~A few scraps of fabric big enough to cover hole-we used Fat Quarters from Joann in the quilting fabric section. You could also look through the remnant section of the fabric store, or use a bandana or fabric you already have. **You don’t even have to cover holes, you can make a patch and place it anywhere!

~A ruler

~A pencil

~An iron

~Index card of piece of small cardboard

Directions:

Step 1-Wash and dry the fabric and iron it.

Step 3-Place the fabric wrong side up (the backside of the print).

Mark a section big enough to cover the hole. Be sure to leave extra room on all 4 sides to apply the Heat n Bond or Stitch Witchery. If not covering a hole, mark the size of fabric you want.

Step 4-Draw straight lines connecting your marks.

Be sure you are drawing on the wrong side of the fabric. Lay the marked section over the hole to double check the sizing before cutting it out!

Step 5-Cut the patch out of the fabric.

Remember to be sure that the fabric has enough room to not only cover the hole, but to allow for the width of the Heat n Bond or Stitch Witchery.

My daughter wanted to create a patch with two kinds of fabric, so we overlapped the second pattern of fabric, and cut out a separate patch making sure that both of them together would cover the hole. If you aren’t covering a hole, you could make it any size you want.

If you want to patch together two or more pieces of fabric, do that first before applying to jeans. Simply outline the fabric where you want it pieced together with Heat n Bond or Stitch Witchery, like you would glue. Then follow the manufacturer’s instructions to fuse it together with an iron.

Step 6-Cut Heat n Bond or Stitch Witchery.

Cut strips of the fusible mesh so that it outlines the patch. Be sure that you have room to attach the fabric patch to the jeans themselves, instead of the hole.

Step 7-Protect the hole

Place the index card or piece of cardboard inside the leg of the jean to cover the hole and protect the patch from being ironed on to the backside of the jean.

Step 8-Iron the patch onto the jeans.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions for Heat n Bond or Stitch Witchery when ironing on the patch. Also be sure that the patch covers the fusible web completely, or you will have edges with a sticky mess, and a sticky iron!
